The Education
and Biology Department work together to provide a program that meets the
Pennsylvania certification requirements for high school teachers.
Because of the
number of courses required for secondary certification, some students may find
it difficult to complete all the requirements in four years, and some state
requirements are more specific than the requirements of the major.
Because of this, it is critical that students thinking about secondary
certification should consult with the Science Education Program Coordinator as
early as possible in their college career.
Three different
approaches to secondary education are suggested.
Students should choose the option best suited to them in consultation
with their adviser as early as possible.
Option 1: Complete
all of the requirements and student teaching during the four years of
undergraduate study, earning a bachelor's degree, and teacher certification at
the same time. (Some courses may have to be taken during the summer in order to
accomplish this.)
Option 2: Complete
the requirements for a major in an appropriate field and a minor in education
during the four years of undergraduate study, earning a bachelor's degree and
eligibility for a Graduate Intern Certification.
This allows recipients to reach full time in a public school classroom
while continuing to take courses to fulfill the teacher certification
requirements during the next three calendar years.
These courses could be taken through Arcadia University's Graduate Program
and would be credited toward a master's degree.
This option is attractive because all teachers are required by the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to complete 24 post-baccalaureate credits.
Option 3: Complete
the requirements for a major in a appropriate field during the four years of
undergraduate study, earning a bachelor's degree.
Then take all the required education courses for teacher certification at
the graduate level.
