What's new in the Biology Department Gina Muscara (biology class of 2006) received the Paul R. Cutright Award, which is given to the senior biology major in recognition of outstanding academic achievement in the life sciences at the spring Honor’s Convocation. Amy C. Werner (biology class of 2007) received The Vira Heinz Scholarship for Education Abroad at the spring Honor’s Convocation. Olga A. Shif (biology and chemistry class of 2006) received The American Institute of Chemist Medal Award for outstanding achievement in chemistry by a senior at the spring Honor’s Convocation. Nicole Worthington (Biology class of 2006) received an Ellington Beavers Award for Intellectual Inquiry for her project “Genetic Analysis of Fragmented Populations of the Timber Rattlesnake, Crotalus horridus, in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.” Nicole is working with Dr. Lauretta Bushar. Valerie Murtha (Biology class of 2007) was awarded the second annual Alumni Honors Scholars Award. This award is given by the Awards Committee of the Board of Trustees to a junior in the Honors Program who has achieved exceptional academic success, has a high degree of intellectual curiosity demonstrated by a rich variety of courses, double majors/minors study abroad experiences, and exemplifies the characteristics of leadership and service through involvement in campus clubs and organizations, athletics and service projects. The senior thesis research of Christa Damkaoutis (’04 Biology), Olga Shif (’06 Biology), Katie Gillette (’06 Biology), and Courtney Carrano (’06 Psychobiology) contributed to the paper titled “Effects of Ginkgo biloba administered after spatial learning on water maze and radial arm maze performance in young adult rats” published in the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behavior.
